Jurisdiction: MA

233 CMR: BOARD OF REGISTRATION OF CHIROPRACTORS

233 CMR 3.00: CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Section

3.01: Continuing Education Requirement 3.02: Waiver of Continuing Education Requirement 3.03: Approval of Continuing Education Courses

3.01: Continuing Education Requirement

As a condition for renewal of his or her registration, each registered chiropractor shall complete at least 12 hours of continuing education during each one-year registration period in courses or programs approved by the Board pursuant to .03. Unless this requirement is waived by the Board pursuant to .02, failure by a registered chiropractor to complete such continuing education shall constitute sufficient grounds for disciplinary action by the Board. A chiropractor is responsible for maintaining written proof satisfactory to the Board that he or she has completed the continuing education required for renewal for a period of no less than three years from the date the course was taken. .01 shall not be construed to decrease the continuing education documentation that must be submitted by individuals seeking reinstatement of an expired license under 233 CMR 2.06: Inactive Status; Individual Reinstatement.

3.02: Waiver of Continuing Education Requirement

The Board may waive the continuing education requirements of .01 for a registered chiropractor who submits written proof satisfactory to the Board that he or she was prevented from meeting that continuing education requirement because of illness or other unforeseeable emergency, extreme hardship, or other good and sufficient reason deemed adequate by the Board. A chiropractor seeking a waiver must submit the request for a waiver and receive written notice that the waiver has been granted by the Board prior to the time the licensee applies for license renewal.

3.03: Approval of Continuing Education Courses

(1) A continuing education course or program shall be approved for continuing education credit if it meets all of the following requirements: (a) The course or program meets the standards established and recognized by the Board; (b) The course or program is sponsored by a CCE-accredited chiropractic school or college; a state, regional or national professional society or association in the field of chiropractic; or an institution of higher learning accredited by the United States Department of Education; (c) The subject matter of the course or program is devoted to matters of clinical proficiency, philosophy and ethics, Massachusetts jurisprudence, or the human and biological sciences; and (d) The sponsoring party ensures that attendance is checked at least twice per session, and provides written certification of attendance, including number of hours attended, to the chiropractor and to the Board upon request.

(2) Courses devoted to economic aspects of practice, services outside the scope of chiropractic practice, or another state's jurisprudence shall not be approved for continuing education credit.

(3) Continuing education credit may be received for a course or program that a chiropractor teaches provided the chiropractor submits supporting documentation as required by the Board and the course is used for credit only once.
