A response to the petition on appeal is optional unless the appellee has filed a notice of cross-appeal, in which case a response is required. The required response must address the claims of error alleged in the petition on appeal and separately state the December 2025 APPELLATE PROCEDURE Ch 6, p.11 grounds for the cross-appeal. Any response, optional or required, must substantially comply with rule 6.1401—Form 6: Response to Petition on Appeal (Cross-Appeal). 6.202(2) Time for filing response to petition on appeal. A response to a petition on appeal must be filed with the clerk of the supreme court within 15 days after service of the petition. 6.202(3) Length; form; cover page. Any response, optional or required, to the petition on appeal may not exceed 20 pages and must be in the form prescribed by rule 6.1007. The cover page must contain: a. The caption of the case. b. The title of the document: “Response to Petition on Appeal”. c. The name of the court and judge whose decision is under review. d. The name, address, telephone number, and email address of counsel representing the appellee.
